Wouldn’t you feel better about your job if you knew your employer had an interest in your health and well-being? Statistics show that employers who value and offer a sound health and wellness program to their workforce see improved productivity, lower health care costs, and happier employees.

In keeping with our vision to provide Montanans with affordable and innovative health and wellness solutions, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana (BCBSMT) designed a customizable wellness plan for our insured groups called Total Health Management (THM), which helps employers to encourage healthy lifestyles at home and on the job.

Using clinical guidelines, specific goals, and effective incentives, THM gives employers a clear plan for engaging their employees. In coordination with a primary care provider, THM gives members specific and achievable goals – like controlling weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels – along with helpful resources and rewards for reaching their goals.

The program’s measurable success shows that group plans using THM have seen an increase in preventive screenings and improved individual scores for health risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and cancer. So far, the greatest success of the program can be seen in the rising number of preventive care screenings for colon, breast, and cervical cancer.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 70 to 90 percent of health care spending is caused by preventable, modifiable health issues. Chronic diseases are the most common and costly of all health problems, but they are also the most preventable. Four common, health-damaging but modifiable behaviors – tobacco use, insufficient physical activity, poor eating habits, and excessive alcohol use – are responsible for much of the illness, disability, and premature death related to chronic diseases.

“All employers are concerned about rising health care costs. We know that preventable diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity account for 75 percent of health care dollars spent each year,” said Kelli Swanson, BCBSMT health and wellness manager. “Preventive screenings for these types of conditions are vital to early detection and treatment.”
